Museu dos Fósforos - Aquiles da Mota Lima

The Aquiles da Mota Lima Matchbox Museum is an unusual attraction. The museum has one of the largest collections of matchboxes in the world. The museum’s collection includes more than 43,000 pieces from over 127 countries, representing different eras and styles. It is now the largest match museum in Europe! 

It is located in an old monastery close to Tomar train and bus station. The Monastery of St. Francis is architecturally modest and looks like a large annex to the church. Entrance to the museum is free. The exhibit is opened from Tuesday to Sunday. Monday is a day off. You can visit the museum from 10:00 to 17:00 (summer to 19:00), with a break from 13:00 to 14:00 (summer to 15:00).

Contemporary Art Center

The Contemporary Art Center was opened in 2004 and has become a center of attraction for contemporary art lovers. The museum Tomar is based on the collections of José Augusto França, the renowned late Portuguese art historian, and other renowned local and international artists, covering a variety of styles. It regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, workshops and lectures. 

The Museu is one of the most visited in the city. Admission is also free. The Contemporary Art Center is open from Tuesday tto Sunday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00 with one hour break. Monday is a day off.

Casa dos Cubos

Casa dos Cubos is a modern cultural center that is an interesting combination of ancient architecture and modern design solutions. It was built in the eighteenth century. Only after a long time, in 2007 Casa dos Cubos was renovated for the first time, keeping its historical features and adding modern elements.

Casa dos Cubos is located near the city’s central square in an old residential quarter of the city. Admission to the museum is usually free, but some events and exhibitions may charge a fee. Casa dos Cubos is open without weekends, and you can visit this beautiful place from Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 18:00 with a break from 12:30 to 14:00. On Saturday and Sunday the museum is open to the public from 14:00 to 18:00.

Casa Memória Lopes-Graça

The museum is one more spot for those who are interested in what to see in Tomar? The attraction was opened in honor of the famous Portuguese composer Fernando Lopes-Graça. The exhibition displays some of Lopes-Graça’s belongings. Tourists can see his birth certificate, musical instruments and scores, read books, view documentation, and listen to music.

Casa Memória Lopes-Graça is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 14:00 to 18:00 in summer from April to September, and from 14:00 to 17:00 in winter. Entrance is free for both tourists and locals.

Museu Hebraico Abraão Zacuto

This museum is dedicated to the history of the Jewish community in Portugal and is named after the prominent Portuguese astronomer and mathematician Abraham Zacuto, who lived in the 15th century. The museum is housed in the former Tomar Synagogue. The museum’s collection includes ancient manuscripts, ritual objects and archaeological finds related to the Jewish culture and history of the region. 

The museum is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00. Sunday is a day off.

A Moagem - Fábrica das Artes

The museum is a modern cultural space converted from a former mill building. This art and cultural center should definitely be in the list of things to do in Tomar. Its auditorium is an exhibition hall and laboratory for educational technology with a seating capacity of 150.

A Moagem – Fábrica das Artes is located in the Levada Cultural Center Complex in Tomar. The opening hours are as follows:

  • Friday: 18:00 – 23:00;
  • Saturday: 10:00 – 13:00 and 15:00 – 23:00;
  • Sunday: 10:00 – 13:00 and 15:00 – 18:00.
