The small ancient Portuguese town of Tomar dates back to the Middle Ages. In Portugal at this time the liberation of its territory from the Moors. The Templars, invited to Portugal by the mother of the first king Afonso – Dona Teresa, who occupied the Portuguese throne at the beginning of the XII century, provided a lot of help in this operation.
The Templars are the knights who founded the Order of Knights in the 12th century in the Holy Land, which later became one of the most powerful organizations of the Middle Ages. Afonso I, who came to the throne, continued the expulsion of the Moors and in 1147, with the support of the Order, liberated the district of Santaray, for which he gave the Templars the surrounding lands between the Tagus and Mondego rivers. The crusader knight of the Order of the Temple, Gualdim Pais, helps Afonso I in the battles against the Moors. To protect the borders of the Kingdom Pais, with the help of the Templars, begins the construction of new and restoration of damaged castles.
In 1160, on his orders, the Templars began construction of a new castle on Tomar Hill. The place for the castle, according to legend, as if by a divine vision, was indicated on the hill where the Templars settled, and the city was built according to the structure of Jerusalem by Paish.
Built on a hill, Tomar Castle was the first fortress on the Iberian Peninsula, with angular and angular features that made it virtually impregnable. In 1190, a huge army led by Yaqub al-Mansur, after lengthy sieges, was unable to take the fortress defended by the dynamic Templars. The oldest structure of the castle is the round church, the so-called Rotunda. It was built in the likeness of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. In those days, the church served as a house of prayer for the Templars.
At the beginning of the XIV century, the Templar Order ceased to exist, and its knights were persecuted by the Holy Inquisition. Only in Portugal, they managed to find refuge, where the king himself was a member of the Templar Order, which in 1318 was renamed the Order of Christ. The castle, which had grown by then, was turned into the Convento do Cristo in 1334 and became the seat of the Order. The monastery also continued to grow and to be reconstructed.
The culmination of all this greatness was the chapter window adorning the western wall of the building. It has gained worldwide fame due to the rich ornamentation of its frames, which includes patterns of exotic plants carved from stone, cork oak, ropes, and exquisite decoration of marine motifs. The crown of this splendor is the cross of the Order of Christ, under which is carved the head of a man.
Continuing the expansion of the castle, under King João III, a Renaissance gallery was added to the nave, which was completed by Philip II. Now the monastery includes a lot of buildings representing styles of different times – from Romanesque art to the Renaissance. Eight galleries and an aqueduct built to supply water to the monastery of the Order of Christ have survived to this day.
