Tourist Information

The Zezere River, originating in the mountainous Serra da Estrela, is an important geographical element in the center of Portugal, and a valuable tourist attraction. The source of this river, located at an altitude of about 1900 meters above sea level, is one of the highest in the country.

From there, overcoming steep slopes and mountain passes, the river valley begins its journey, first overcoming turbulent rapids and then slowly deepening into the valley. Passing through small villages and mountain settlements, it gathers numerous streams and creeks in its waters, feeding on water from both sides. With each kilometer it takes on new features and forms landscapes that change from rocky gorges to green meadows.

One of the interesting parts of the river is when it turns into a reservoir known as Barragem do Cabril. Here, the river loses its turbulent nature, turning into a calm surface where the waters slow their flow and reflect the surrounding forests and mountains. This area, which Meseta Meridional Naturtejo has named “The Winding Paths of Zezere”, has become a destination for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of nature and water activities.

The Zézere River also plays an important role in shaping Portugal’s cultural landscape. It passes through a number of historical and cultural sites, including Aldeias do Xisto, and Abrantes with the traditional architecture and culture of the region. These villages, located along the banks of the Zezere, are not only historical heritage but also tourism centers where visitors can learn about local customs and traditions.

Overall, the Zezere River is an important component of Portugal’s tourism potential, offering visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in its beautiful landscapes, historical sites and cultural heritage.
