Tourist Information

Igreja de Santa Maria dos Olivais (Church of Santa Maria do Olival) is associated with the Knights Templar. “Olival” means “olive grove” and is thus associated with the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem.

The Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the most famous of the Templar churches in Tomar, but the church of Santa Maria do Olival is also a must-see. In the 13th century, when Tomar was ruled by the Knights Templar, the city’s first Gothic church was built. At that time, the burial processions of the members of the order were held here. Later, the church became the resting place of the Knights of the “Order of Christ”.

Unfortunately, the building has undergone multiple reconstructions, but in general has retained its original appearance. At the altar stands a majestic statue of the Virgin Mary. From other churches in the city, it is distinguished by the presence of an interesting window above the entrance, made in the form of a flower.

The best time to visit is in the morning or evening hours to avoid the crowds of tourists. According to the advice of locals, the best time to visit the church is on weekdays, when it is most quiet and peaceful.

Near the Roman Catholic church, there are several cozy restaurants and cafes where you can enjoy the local cuisine after sightseeing. For example, try the local specialties at O Oliveirense, a short walk from the church, or relax with a cup of coffee at the cozy Café Santa Maria.

Interesting Facts

History. The church of Santa Maria do Olival, erected around 1160 by the workmanship of Gualdim Paix, is an important architectural testimony of the times of the Knights Templar and the Order of Christ. The simple Gothic-style church was used as a mausoleum for the Knights Templar and later the Knights of Christ, which succeeded the Templars after their abolition in the 14th century. The tomb of Gualdim Paish himself is also in the church.

The importance of the church in medieval times is confirmed by a papal bull which placed it in direct dependence on the pope and the Holy See, outside the control of any diocese. The church is also associated with the secret and mysterious initiation rituals of the Templars, and the recent discovery of secret underground passages seems to confirm this.

Architecture. On the outside of the church of Santa Maria do Olival is a magnificent rose window and pentagram, the Templar symbol, which is also associated with the five wounds of Christ. However, the same symbol was used as evidence of heresy during the torture and trial of Grand Master Jacques de Molay in France.

The interior of the church includes three naves, side chapels, an altar and a bell tower separate from the main building, built during the time of King Manuel I. The side chapels, added in the 16th century, are decorated with tile masonry and gilded wood carvings.

Places nearby. In addition to the church, there are other interesting places in Tomar. For example, the Museu dos Fósforos, or the Matchbox Museum, is a unique place near the Tomar train station where you can learn a lot about the matchbox industry. The Tomar Synagogue is a testament to the city’s historical diversity and cultural heritage. The Church of St. John the Baptist, located in Republic Square, is another architectural and historical landmark of the city.

LifeHacks for visiting. When visiting the national monument, it is recommended to study the history of the Templars and the Order of Christ beforehand to realise the significance of the place.
